New Fund Memorializing Former Buchtel-York Student Will Promote Academic Enrichment
NELSONVILLE, OH – Max Conner was a vibrant and active student in the Buchtel-York, now Nelsonville-York, School District, who tragically passed away at age 16 in 1961. While Max never had the opportunity to fulfill his life’s potential, the Conner family has established a fund in Max’s memory through the Foundation for Appalachian Ohio (FAO) to help today’s students better fulfill theirs.
The Max Conner Memorial Fund to Support the Nelsonville-York School District will provide permanent support through grants that promote academic excellence and classroom enrichment for students in the Nelsonville-York School District. The Conner family hopes grants distributed through the Fund will empower teachers in the Nelsonville-York School District to take advantage of opportunities for their students that might not otherwise be available.
“Our family has long wanted to remember my brother by making a difference in his Nelsonville community,” said Terry Conner, Max’s brother. “With this fund, we know his legacy will continue to be honored through investments in generations of students and educators at his school.”
During the 2018-2019 school year, $2,000 will be available for mini-grants ranging in size from $100 to $500. The first round of grant applications will be accepted from October 3, 2018 to November 7, 2018, and any employee of the Nelsonville-York School District is eligible to apply for funding. $2,000 will also be available during the 2019-2020 and 2020-2021 school years. The availability of grants may increase thereafter, as the Fund continues to grow and honor the legacy of its namesake for generations to come. Applications will be available online at www.AppalachianOhio.org or in the offices of the Nelsonville-York City School District.
