Carrollton Exempted Village School District Receives Grant Award

Walnut Creek, OH – Dale Hileman was known for his deep commitment to economic development in Appalachian Ohio. Now, with grant awards to support economic development projects from the Dale Hileman Legacy Fund, that legacy will live on forever. The 2018 grant award from the Dale Hileman Legacy Fund, a fund of the Foundation for Appalachian Ohio (FAO), was announced at the April 28 annual meeting of the Eastern Ohio Development Alliance (EODA).

Mr. Hileman was a native of Columbiana County and worked for Columbia Gas of Ohio for 40 years serving Carrollton, Jackson, and finally, Cambridge in Appalachian Ohio. He believed deeply in the importance of connecting Appalachian Ohio youth to careers in their local communities. This year’s grant from the Dale Hileman Legacy Fund will do just that.

The Carrollton Exempted Village School District received a $700 grant award to support its Workforce Development pilot project. In partnership with Carroll County Economic Development and local manufacturers, fifth, seventh, and ninth graders from the school district will visit local manufacturers in Carroll County to explore different manufacturing careers in their backyards. This pilot program will demonstrate different careers the students can pursue locally while learning what training, education, and certification they need to pursue these careers

“We are pleased to continue to honor Dale’s legacy from the Fund bearing his name with a grant to the Carrollton Exempted Village School District,” said Jim Schoch, executive director of EODA. “We are eager to hear about the students’ experiences on site visits to these manufacturers and the new pathways it might open for students. This pilot project has great potential and we look forward to where it might go in the future.”

The Dale Hileman Legacy Fund promotes the same cause Mr. Hileman championed throughout his life, economic development and growth. The Dale Hileman Legacy Fund will support organizations working to promote economic growth within the 16 counties served by EODA, comprising Athens, Belmont, Carroll, Columbiana, Coshocton, Guernsey, Harrison, Holmes, Jefferson, Monroe, Morgan, Muskingum, Noble, Perry, Tuscarawas, and Washington counties.

Mr. Hileman passed away in February 2015 after a lifetime of service to eastern Ohio and 40 years with Columbia Gas of Ohio. Even after his retirement, he continued to serve the region he loved. When he and his wife, Evelyn, stayed in Cambridge, Ohio in Guernsey County upon his retirement, Mr. Hileman remained committed to improving quality of life while steadfastly promoting his community.

EODA made the initial $10,000 gift to establish the Fund to recognize and honor Dale’s legacy. Columbia Gas of Ohio also made a $25,000 gift to the Fund to recognize Dale’s years of service to the organization and to the region. The inaugural grant was awarded last year to Leadership Columbiana County to support the expansion of its leadership program to youth in the county.

Gifts to the Dale Hileman Legacy Fund are tax deductible and can be made in many ways, including cash, bequests, and life insurance.
