Nelsonville Residents Come Together at Event

Nelsonville, OH – Overlooking Nelsonville’s historic Public Square, people passionate about Nelsonville gathered on August 10 to celebrate the success of the Nelsonville Restoration Foundation and the creation of the Nelsonville Foundation Fund at the Foundation for Appalachian Ohio (FAO).

Former trustees, residents, and community leaders came together to celebrate the Nelsonville Restoration Foundation’s success in meeting their mission to save and restore Nelsonville’s historic school buildings. After the sale of the former High and Junior High School buildings on Fayette Street to a developer planning to remodel the buildings into affordable housing and commercial space, soon to be known as the Nelsonville School Commons, the trustees wanted to ensure the proceeds continued to benefit the Nelsonville community. That’s when the former Nelsonville Restoration Foundation trustees approached the Foundation for Appalachian Ohio about the possibility of creating a permanent endowment fund.

“To honor the legacy and commitment of the Nelsonville Restoration Foundation to the community, we used the remaining funds to establish the Nelsonville Foundation Fund,” said Dorothy Gettle, a former trustee of the Nelsonville Restoration Foundation. “We are excited to work with FAO to create philanthropic resources right here in Nelsonville, supporting opportunities for generations to come.”

The new Nelsonville Foundation Fund will continue to make a difference in the Nelsonville community through future grantmaking, reflecting the legacy of service and pride exhibited by the volunteer leadership of the former Nelsonville Restoration Foundation and all those involved with the project. The Nelsonville Foundation Fund will have an advisory committee of local volunteers who will lead efforts to grow the Fund’s resources and oversee its grantmaking. As the Fund grows, it will have the capacity to make grants to local organizations, including nonprofits and schools, for projects that improve quality of life in Nelsonville.

The Fund will serve as a permanent resource for the Nelsonville community, encouraging philanthropy, and supporting solutions for community needs and initiatives. The Nelsonville Foundation Fund is an easy way to give back to the Nelsonville community, both now and for generations to come.

“We are so honored that the Nelsonville Restoration Foundation came to us with the idea to start a community foundation for Nelsonville,” said Cara Dingus Brook, president and CEO of the Foundation for Appalachian Ohio. “Their vision for the Nelsonville community is inspiring and their work to establish an endowment fund will make a difference for many future generations.”

Gifts to the Nelsonville Foundation Fund are tax deductible and can be made in many ways, including cash, bequests, and life insurance.
