100 Teachers Across Appalachian Ohio Receive iPads through Partnership with the Duke Energy Foundation
Nelsonville,OH – The Foundation forAppalachian Ohio (FAO) is proud to announce 111 students in the 4ththrough 8th grades across Appalachian Ohio’s 32 counties have wonthe 6th annual Child ofAppalachia® Writing Contest. Nearly 3,000 students submittedessays answering the question “if you could invent something for yourcommunity, what would it be and what problem would it solve?”
“Each year, the Childof Appalachia Writing Contest gives students a creative outlet to sharetheir observations, ideas, and dreams,” said Cara Dingus Brook, FAO presidentand CEO. “The contest is one of FAO’s favorite parts of the year as ourregion’s youngest citizens open up their minds to all of us.”
Each winning student was awarded two tickets to COSI,Great Lakes Science Center, or the Cincinnati Museum of Natural History andScience to further explore their interest in inventions. Through the generosityof the Duke Energy Foundation, each of the 100 teachers of winning students wasprovided an iPad to be integrated into his or her classroom curriculum.
“We are excited to see this technology reach the handsof teachers across Appalachian Ohio,” said Karen Monday, vice president of theDuke Energy Foundation. “The winning students showed such enthusiasm andcreativity in their essays that we can only imagine what they can do withaccess to today’s technology.”
