United Appeal for Athens County Opens Endowment Fund to Support Basic Needs

United Appeal’s Commitment to the Community

Athens, OHWith the goal of growing long-term support for its work to help people meet their basic needs of food, shelter, healthcare, and companionship, United Appeal for Athens County opened an endowment fund with the Foundation for Appalachian Ohio (FAO). United Appeal is a health and human services organization dedicated to connecting area residents with the social, health, and government services they need. Creating the endowment fund is one more service to the community.

“A long term endowment fund gives donors another way to help people meet their basic needs,” explained Janet Long, president of the United Appeal board of directors. “The Fund helps donors have a way to give lasting gifts to support United Appeal, the work of Athens County 211, and other programs throughout the county. We chose to work with the Foundation for Appalachian Ohio because of the professional guidance they have provided us and dozens of other charities in establishing endowment funds to support their missions.”

The organizational endowment fund will begin with an $84,000 investment resulting from the proceeds of the sale of United Appeal’s real estate asset that had been purchased in 1989.

“The foresight of previous United Appeal leaders gave us an asset that provided office space for United Appeal for several decades and is now providing a permanent gift to the community,” added Long.

The Foundation for Appalachian Ohio is a regional community foundation based in Nelsonville and serving all 32 counties of Appalachian Ohio with the mission to create opportunities for Appalachian Ohio’s citizens and communities by inspiring and supporting philanthropy. FAO partners with nonprofit organizations like United Appeal for Athens County to grow lasting resources to support their missions.

“United Appeal for Athens provides vital support and leadership for so many good works,” said FAO President and CEO Cara Dingus Brook. “They are making a huge difference, and we are really excited to be working with them to grow an endowment to support their work forever.”

Gifts to the United Appeal for Athens County Endowment Fund are tax deductible and can be made in many ways, including cash, bequests, and life insurance.
