We're more than a community foundation.
The Foundation for Appalachian Ohio (FAO) is a 501(c)(3) regional community foundation – the first and only community foundation serving all 32 counties of Appalachian Ohio. But even more, we serve as the home for a community of givers – donors and doers working together to create opportunities for the people and communities of our region. In partnership with our community of givers, we are working to create a Flourishing Appalachian Ohio.
Since becoming an official nonprofit organization in 1999, we have grown to be a trusted financial partner to thousands of donors. Today, we steward more than 700 charitable funds, totaling $122 million in assets.
Here, we believe everyone has a gift that matters to the future of Appalachian Ohio. And when we combine our gifts and work toward a common goal, we will build communities where everyone flourishes.
Our investments improve health, create educational opportunities, advance economic development and environmental stewardship, and provide access to new arts and cultural experiences.

Our History
Creating lasting change for over 25 years
Our journey began in 1998 with a group of leaders on the front lines of poverty relief who recognized that lasting change for the people of Appalachian Ohio would not occur without philanthropy. They believed the people of our region had the same potential as people anywhere; they lacked the same opportunities.
