Ulloa Scholarship Applications Now Available

The Foundation for Appalachian Ohio is now accepting applications for the Ariana R. Ulloa Scholarship. Scholarships are awarded on the basis of a competitive process that considers financial need, academic achievement, extra-curricular activities, educational goals and personal aspirations. International students or students enrolled in international studies that have already accepted or enrolled full-time in a two or four year college, university, technical or vocational school are encouraged to apply. Recipients are selected without regard to race, color, creed, religion, sex, handicap, or national origin.

The scholarship fund was established at the Foundation for Appalachian Ohio to honor the life and memory of Ariana R. Ulloa. A native of Mexico, Ariana received a degree in chemical engineering from the National University of Mexico. She moved to Athens with her husband and four children in 1986 and began working for the Hocking College Department of International Programs in 1990, eventually moving into the position of director. She had a reputation for her kind and encouraging nature and was known to many as “Mamá Ariana.”

Ariana passed away in December 2002, but her legacy continues through this endowed scholarship fund, created through the contributions of Ariana’s family, friends, and students. In keeping with her work in International Programs, the scholarships are offered to international students or students pursuing a degree in international studies.

Leslie Lilly, President and CEO of the Foundation for Appalachian Ohio noted how the Foundation works with donors to help make these scholarships possible for students. “Increasing access to higher education is a key issue in our region,” she said. “Charitable giving is making college a more attainable reality for students, both now and into the future.”

Scholarship applications are available at the guidance offices of Hocking College, Ohio University, the Foundation’s office and website, www.appalachianohio.org. Completed applications must be received by 4:00 p.m., May 15, 2006, at the Foundation for Appalachian Ohio, P.O. Box 456, Nelsonville, OH 45764. Scholarship recipient(s) will be announced after June 5, 2006.
