About Ben Shaver
Ben Shaver graduated from Moxahala High School in 1942. He served in the U.S. Army Medical Corps during World War II. He received his B. A. Degree from Muskingum College in 1950 and a M. Ed. Degree from Ohio University in 1954. For the next 30 years he was a teacher/coach and public school administrator retiring as Ashland County Superintendent in 1979.
Ben was the co-founder and former president of the Ohio Association of Local School Superintendents Association (OALSS). Later he became president of the Ohio County Superintendents Association and a charter member of the Washington, D.C.-based Council of Rural Electric Cooperative Communicators. It was Ben’s earnest hope that this scholarship will enable some young person to build a foundation for a productive life and that they will then help someone else.
It is with deep sorrow that we share the passing of Ben Shaver, a tireless advocate for equitable access to higher education for all. Ben’s life was marked by an unwavering commitment to breaking down the barriers that too often prevent individuals from pursuing their academic dreams. He dedicated much of his life to ensuring that higher education was not a privilege reserved for a few, but a right available to all who seek it, regardless of their background or financial situation. His legacy is reflected not only in the lives of the countless students who benefited from his efforts, but also in the policies and initiatives that continue to champion accessible education today.
Ben believed that education was the key to unlocking opportunity, and that everyone should have the chance to improve their future through learning. His vision extended beyond just access, as he understood that higher education must be a transformative experience—one that empowers individuals and communities to flourish. Through his work, Ben helped create lasting change, and his legacy will continue to inspire generations of educators, students, and advocates.
As we mourn his loss, we also celebrate the impact of his lifelong dedication to education. His work remains as important as ever, and his passion for accessible higher education will forever be a guiding light for those who follow in his footsteps.
