Mapping generosity in action

FAO’s 2023 impact map highlights investments made across 32-county region

NELSONVILLE, Ohio – The Foundation for Appalachian Ohio is a community of givers – donors and doers who bring their contributions together to advance transformative initiatives that create immediate and long-term impact in our 32-county region.

Because of their generosity and commitment to our mission, 2023 was a transformative year for the people and communities of Appalachian Ohio.

Every symbol on this map represents opportunities created, needs filled and seeds planted for the future – all because of the generosity of our community of givers. In 2023:

  • A record-breaking $9.5 million was awarded in fellowships, grants and scholarships across our 32 counties.
  • A new fellowship program, our Growing Home Fellowship, was developed to recruit, retain and support young leaders in Appalachian Ohio. The first cohort includes fellows in 29 of the region’s 32 counties.
  • A new program was launched to engage our youth as community builders.
  • Our mobile vision clinic partnership made history and is being expanded statewide.

Today, FAO stewards $105.5 million in charitable assets and more than 700 charitable funds. It all started 25 years ago with visionaries who believed that the people of our region have the same potential as people anywhere, but not always the same opportunities. The extraordinary journey they pioneered has brought us to this unprecedented year of support for the people and communities of Appalachian Ohio.
