About Dr. Erik Aanestad

Dr. Erik Aanestad, an avid sportsman and conservationist, dedicated his professional life to the health and welfare of animals. Dr. Aanestad practiced veterinary medicine in Athens, Ohio, and through his profession was able to bring much joy and happiness to people and their animals alike. Man’s best friend always held a special place in Dr. Aanestad’s heart.

These two men left a long legacy and imprint on people that will be remembered for years to come. As part of this legacy, the families of Mr. Karr and Dr. Aanestad could not think of a better tribute to them than creating a fund encompassing both men’s passions.

Although gone from this world, the Karr-Aanestad K9 Foundation Fund will forever keep their memories and passions alive. The hope for this fund is that in every contact these wildlife K9 teams make, whether protecting our natural resources or educating future generations, that a part of these men’s legacies will live on forever.

The Karr-Aanestad K9 Foundation Fund supports the Division of Wildlife’s K9 Program and its work to promote and protect Ohio’s fish and wildlife resources while also providing assistance to field officers and allied agencies.

The fund assists the canine teams with purchases of equipment and/or canines as needed, ensuring these unique teams are provided with the very best care and support available. These wildlife canine teams provide a great avenue to teach consumptive and non-consumptive users alike about the importance of wildlife conservation including public relations, law enforcement activities and deterring potential violators. The unique canine teams are trained and certified to detect wildlife, gunpowder and ginseng; additionally, canine teams are certified in tracking as well as building, area and article searches. Some of the canine teams are also trained in handler protection.
