Guernsey County Foundation Grant Supports Southeastern Ohio Regional Medical Center
Cambridge, OH – Would you know how to respond in an emergency situation? Would you have the tools you’d need on hand? Those questions are ones that the Southeastern Ohio Regional Medical Center plans to answer through the Stop the Bleed program supported by a grant from the Guernsey County Foundation, a community fund of the Foundation for Appalachian Ohio (FAO).
This grant award will support the distribution of over 100 kits throughout Guernsey County following a convening of first responders and other stakeholders to determine where kits should be distributed. Prioritizing schools, distribution of Stop the Bleed kits will be accompanied by corresponding training to ensure kits are used to the greatest efficacy possible. The training and kits will provide community members with the skills and tools necessary to learn proper bleeding control techniques to ensure communities are prepared to respond to emergency situations where serious trauma is present.
“We can never be too prepared to address emergency situations where trauma is present,” said Dr. Michael Sarap, a surgeon at Southeastern Ohio Regional Medical Center and the founder of the Stop the Bleed program in Guernsey County. “Time is one of the most crucial factors in these situations and by training individuals in proper bleeding control techniques, we can save lives.”
Distribution of Stop the Bleed kits and accompanying training has already taken place with the East Guernsey Local School District and Cambridge City Schools, with training planned with other school districts in the county, as well as other community institutions. Open education is also planned for those in the community who are interested.
