Students and Teachers Still Have Time to Participate in the Foundation for Appalachian Ohio’s 2009 Child of Appalachia® Essay and Poetry Contest

(September 18, 2009) Nelsonville, Ohio – There is still time for students to share how living in Appalachia inspires them through participation in the Foundation for Appalachian Ohio’s 4th Annual Child of Appalachia® Essay Contest, open to all 4th through 9th grade students! New opportunities and awards have been added – including over 380 awards for students and teachers.

The Foundation has expanded this year’s contest through the generous partnership of American Electric Power, the Walmart Foundation and Edward Jones offices throughout the 32 county region of Appalachian Ohio, including the addition of a 9th grade poetry component as a result of AEP’s support.

The partnership of the Walmart Foundation and Edward Jones will provide student and teacher incentives for six (6) winners, one per grade level, in each of the 32 Appalachian Ohio counties. In each county, six students will have a $50 educational award for college savings, sponsored in part by Edward Jones offices in our region. For each winning student, his/her submitting teacher will receive $500 to be used for classroom enrichment activities and/or projects to extend curriculum, sponsored by the Walmart Foundation.

All essays and poems must be postmarked by October 9. Detailed information on the 2009 Contest and Prompt can be found at www.fao.local and questions may be directed to Phyllis Moody, Foundation Services and Scholarship Program Coordinator, at 740.753.1111.
