Six Monroe County students receive scholarships
WOODSFIELD, Ohio – The Foundation for Appalachian Ohio (FAO) has awarded more than $593,000 in donor-established postsecondary scholarships to students across Appalachian Ohio, including six students from Monroe County.
Four River High School graduates received the River High School Alumni and Friends Fund Scholarship. This fund supports the students and teachers at River High School through classroom mini-grants and scholarship awards. The 2023 scholarship recipients are:

· Grady Palmer
· Hannah Raper
· Elijah Wayt
Bier and Olivia Valkovic, a graduate of Monroe Central High School, received the John G. and Suzanne Scott Weber Scholarship, which was established to lay a firm foundation for students graduating from the Switzerland of Ohio School District.
Valkovic was also awarded the Jeff Cox and Jane Schumacher Cox Scholarship, which provides postsecondary education support to students at Buckeye Trail High School and Monroe Central High School.
Emily Crooks, a graduate of Beallsville High School, received the Davey L. and Sandra Jackson Turner Memorial Scholarship, which supports graduating students from Monroe County’s four Switzerland of Ohio high schools.
FAO partners with donors, volunteers and affiliate foundations, including the Monroe County Community Foundation, to award scholarships through a competitive application process to students across the 32 counties of Appalachian Ohio.
To date this year, FAO has awarded nearly 600 postsecondary scholarships, totaling more than $593,000, to 337 students thanks to gifts from residents and friends of Appalachian Ohio who recognize the role education can play in the future success of both young adults and the region’s
