Seven Jackson County students receive scholarships
JACKSON, Ohio – The Foundation for Appalachian Ohio (FAO) has awarded more than $593,000 in donor-established postsecondary scholarships to students across Appalachian Ohio, including seven students from Jackson County.
The Dr. Allen Smith Memorial Scholarship was established in honor of the late Dr. L. Allen Smith, a native of Jackson and a graduate of Ohio University, and in honor of the work and legacy of Dr. Smith’s mother, the late Mary Ellen Smith. The scholarship supports students graduating from Jackson High School.
The recipients of the 2023 Smith Scholastic Award for achievement in math, science and engineering are:

· Natalie Malone
The recipients of the 2023 Smith Community Service Award to honor Mary Ellen Smith’s legacy of community service and stewardship are:
· Allison Castina
· Olivia Moore
The Bob Evans and Wayne F. White Legacy Scholarship, honoring the legacy and commitment these two friends had to the Appalachian Ohio region, was awarded to:
· Elizabeth Hughes, a graduate of Oak Hill High School
· Natalie Malone
· Cecilia Plummer, a graduate of Wellston High School
· Alli Tobert, a graduate of Southeastern High School
FAO partners with donors, volunteers and affiliate foundations, including the Jackson County Community Foundation, to award scholarships through a competitive application process to students across the 32 counties of Appalachian Ohio.
To date this year, FAO has awarded nearly 600 postsecondary scholarships, totaling more than $593,000, to 337 students thanks to gifts from residents
