More than $700,000 in scholarships awarded to students across the region

LOGAN, Ohio – The Foundation for Appalachian Ohio (FAO) and the Hocking County Community Fund have awarded more than $700,000 in donor-established postsecondary scholarships to students across the 32-county region, including four students from Hocking County.

Delaney Dean and Max McDonald received the Lee Beckett Legacy Scholarship, honoring the work and legacy of educator Mrs. Lee Beckett. This scholarship is awarded annually to graduating seniors from Nelsonville-York High School. Dean plans to attend Hiram College, and McDonald plans to attend Ohio University.

Emma Fuller and Kinsey Myers received the Jim Raeder Helping Hand Scholarship, established to help graduating seniors of Logan High School who show academic promise and are pursuing careers in STEM (science, technology, engineering and mathematics), teaching or business. Fuller plans to attend the University of Cincinnati, and Myers plans to attend Otterbein University.

Fuller also was awarded:

  • The AK Steel Foundation Scholarship, supporting students pursuing studies in STEM fields, with particular emphasis on metallurgy
  • The Bob Evans and Wayne F. White Legacy Scholarship, honoring the legacy and commitment these two friends had to the Appalachian Ohio region
  • The Ora E. Anderson Scholarship, established to honor Ora Eaton Anderson, which supports students who plan to pursue postsecondary studies in natural sciences and demonstrate an overall commitment to environmental protection and conservation

FAO partners with donors, an advisory committee of volunteers and its affiliate foundations, including the Hocking County Community Fund, to award scholarships to students across the 32 counties of Appalachian Ohio through a competitive application process.

To date this year, FAO has awarded more than 600 postsecondary scholarships to more than 300 students across 26 counties thanks to gifts from residents and friends of Appalachian Ohio who recognize the role education plays in ensuring the region’s people and communities can flourish.
