{"id":344,"date":"2026-08-27T12:17:32","date_gmt":"2026-08-27T12:17:32","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/appalachianohio.org\/morgan\/?p=344"},"modified":"2026-08-27T12:17:57","modified_gmt":"2026-08-27T12:17:57","slug":"fill-the-freezer-returns-to-the-morgan-county-fair","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/appalachianohio.org\/morgan\/2026\/08\/27\/fill-the-freezer-returns-to-the-morgan-county-fair\/","title":{"rendered":"Fill the Freezer returns to the Morgan County Fair"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><em>Second annual campaign continues to fight hunger \u2013 one pig at a time<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>McCONNELSVILLE, Ohio<\/strong>\u00a0\u2013 The Morgan Community Fund (MCF) is bringing the <a href=\"https:\/\/appalachianohio.org\/morgan\/opportunities\/fill-the-freezer\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Fill the Freezer campaign<\/a> back to the Morgan County Fair for the second consecutive year and rallying the community to fight local hunger \u2013 one pig at a time.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The campaign invites buyers at the fair\u2019s Sept. 12 junior livestock sale to donate their hog purchases to fill the freezers of Morgan County United Ministries\u2019 food pantry.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">In its first year, the campaign resulted in 13 hogs donated, surpassing a goal of 10 hogs and generating 1,450 pounds of locally raised protein to feed Morgan County residents.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cFill the Freezer allows us to address a fundamental need in Morgan County and, at the same time, support the talents and hard work of our 4-H and FFA youth,\u201d said Kelsey Wells, MCF committee member. \u201cWe\u2019re incredibly proud of how our community members showed up in the campaign\u2019s very first year, and we can\u2019t wait to see our county\u2019s generosity in action again.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The campaign is held in partnership with the Morgan County Fair Board and Sale Committee, local 4-H members and Morgan High School\u2019s FFA chapter, Hilltop Butcher Shop in Malta and the food pantry at Morgan County United Ministries. EOG Resources is serving as corporate sponsor of this year\u2019s campaign and covering a portion of the meat processing costs.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The meat donated through Fill the Freezer not only helps individuals and families in Morgan County, where nearly 17 percent of the population experiences food insecurity, but also the food pantry, which serves approximately 450-500 families each month. The Southeast Ohio Foodbank, which serves food pantries in 10 Appalachian Ohio counties including Morgan County United Ministries\u2019 food pantry, reports that only 12 percent of the commodities it receives and distributes is perishable protein like frozen meat, poultry and seafood.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">MCF is one of a growing number of FAO\u2019s affiliate foundation partners spearheading or supporting Fill the Freezer and similar campaigns.
