2008 Essay Contest Guidelines and Submission Form
The Foundation for Appalachian Ohio, your regional community foundation, is pleased to announce the third annual I’m a Child of Appalachia® Essay Contest, open to all 4th, 5th, 6th, 7th and 8th grade students who live and attend school in one of the 29 counties of Appalachian Ohio.
This year’s essay prompt asks students to think about the people who have been positive influences in their lives and write about how they hope to have a similar impact on others.
Specifically, the prompt asks:
Many people have been a positive influence in your life. As you grow, how will you help others and make a difference in their lives?
One winner will be selected from each grade, along with several honorable mentions and top winners will receive a $100 savings bond and their teachers will receive a $500 grant to support classroom curriculum enrichment. Additionally, if an entire classroom submits essays in the contest, the classroom will be entered into a drawing for a free field trip to the John and Annie Glenn Museum and Exploration Center in New Concord, Ohio.
The contest is part of the Foundations broader I’m a Child of Appalachia® campaign, which is creating awareness of the need to improve access to post-secondary education for students in this region. The campaign promotes greater investment in the region to increase student success at all levels of education.
Essay submissions along with completed entry forms must be postmarked to the Foundation by October 3, 2008. The entry form and specific guidelines are available here.
